Chapter 4 - The Silent Observer

Close-up: Tight shot on Nathan’s face hiding in the shadows of the doorway.
Nathan Graves was a man who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire by spotting weaknesses and exploiting them. He was notoriously cold, highly suspicious, and entirely devoid of emotional sentimentality when it came to his business operations. When he had first pushed open the utility room door, he fully expected to find a lazy employee hiding from their duties, entirely prepared to fire her on the spot without a second thought.
But as he watched the eighteen-year-old girl sitting on the cold concrete floor, desperately fighting a broken prosthetic leg with trembling hands, his initial cold suspicion completely, instantly evaporated.
It was replaced by a dark, dangerous, and incredibly intense edge.
Nathan's dark eyes narrowed, analyzing the terrifying reality of what he was witnessing. He saw the cheap duct tape holding the girl's medical equipment together. He saw the sheer physical exhaustion etched into her young face. He heard her brave, heartbreaking whisper.
He didn't see a lazy employee. He saw an incredibly resilient, hardworking kid who was being completely crushed by a systemic failure.
And then, a sickening realization hit him.
He owned the comprehensive health insurance company that provided coverage for the estate staff. His corporate policies dictated the exact terms of their medical benefits. If this girl was working in his house with a completely broken, agonizingly painful prosthetic leg, it meant she either couldn't afford to fix it, or someone in his massive organization had actively denied her desperate request for medical assistance.
