Chapter 5 - The Desperate Hours

Medium shot: Oblivious to the powerful billionaire standing in the shadows behind her, Annie lowered her head in defeat.
She raised the sleeve of her black-and-white maid uniform, gently rubbing her incredibly tired, tear-filled eyes. She couldn't afford to cry. Crying wouldn't fix the broken locking mechanism, and crying wouldn't pay her upcoming rent.
She reached down, her small hands grabbing the loose, worn leather strap on the side of the heavy prosthetic leg. She pulled it viciously tight, wincing as the rough material dug into her skin, desperately trying to force the broken socket to hold on just a little bit longer.
"I can't lose these hours," Annie whispered under her breath, her voice trembling with the sheer, suffocating weight of poverty and desperation. "Just get me through the dining room shift. Just one more day until the insurance kicks in. Please."
She reached out across the cold concrete floor, grabbing a small, rusted metal toolbox she had secretly stashed under the lowest shelf. She pulled out a small screwdriver, fully intending to perform another desperate, painful, amateur repair on a piece of highly sensitive medical equipment just so she could stand up and scrub floors for another six hours.
She was willing to endure absolute physical torture just to keep her job.
Nathan watched her pick up the screwdriver. The sight of the rusted tool completely shattered the last remaining ounce of his billionaire composure. The idea that an eighteen-year-old orphan was performing emergency mechanical surgery on her own limb in the dark utility room of his multi-million-dollar estate was absolutely, fundamentally unacceptable.
