Chapter 3 - THE LOCKED BOX
The wooden box belonged to Eleanor’s late father.
He used it to store original seals and handwritten agreements from the early years of Holloway Meridian.
Eleanor gave it to Clara when she opened her design firm.
Not because the box was valuable.
Because Clara liked old things with history.
Years later, Clara discovered Liam had been using her digital signature on Vance acquisitions.
She began printing documents before they could be deleted.
Board minutes.
Loan papers.
Subsidiary transfers.
Internal emails.
Then she found counterfeit corporate seals.
Liam was using Clara’s firm as a shell to move debt away from Vance Consolidated.
If regulators discovered the fraud, Clara’s name would appear first.
She would look like the architect.
Liam would look like the husband trying to clean up her mistakes.
Clara hid the originals in the wooden box.
Beatrice found it once.
Clara claimed it held jewelry.
After that, she moved it constantly.
Behind books.
Inside linen cabinets.
Beneath the nursery floor.
The housemaid, Hannah Price, helped.
Hannah had watched Beatrice slap Clara, Liam twist her arm, and Michael threaten to destroy Eleanor’s workshop if Clara contacted police.
She secretly copied security footage and financial files.
She also saw Liam meet with a private attorney named Calvin Reed.
Reed specialized in asset protection, but his real value was making fraud look like marital consent.
He prepared a postnuptial agreement stating Clara voluntarily transferred all business assets to Liam.
He backdated it.
Then obtained a notary stamp from a clerk who owed Michael money.
The locked box contained the authentic records proving the transfers happened before the supposed agreement existed.
The timeline would destroy the entire defense.
That was why Liam lunged for the box.
That was why Clara begged Eleanor to hide it.
