Chapter 5 - THE HOUSEMAID WHO SAVED THE FOOTAGE
Hannah Price had worked for the Vance family for two years.
She was twenty-four.
Quiet.
Observant.
Supporting a younger brother through college.
Beatrice treated her as furniture.
That invisibility became protection.
Hannah knew every service corridor.
Every camera blind spot.
Every locked office.
She also knew the night Liam pushed Clara down the staircase.
The family called it a fall.
Hannah saw him grab Clara’s shoulder.
She found blood near the lower rail.
The security footage disappeared by morning.
But Hannah had copied the server before deletion.
She stored files on encrypted drives inside flour containers in the service kitchen.
Months of footage survived.
Liam striking Clara.
Beatrice forcing her to kneel and sign documents.
Michael threatening the maid staff.
Reed carrying blank notary forms.
A Vance accountant discussing offshore transfers.
The most important footage showed Clara trying to leave.
Liam blocked the front doors.
Beatrice held Clara’s phone.
Michael said:
“If you embarrass this family, your mother’s little company disappears by Monday.”
Clara answered:
“You don’t know my mother.”
Michael laughed.
That laugh later played before a federal jury.
Hannah’s footage also revealed something Eleanor did not expect.
Clara knew her mother was wealthy.
Not everything.
Enough.
Three months earlier, she found an old Holloway Meridian document in the locked box.
She recognized Eleanor’s signature.
She could have exposed the secret and demanded help.
She did not.
Why?
Because Liam had threatened Hannah.
If Clara contacted Eleanor, he would accuse Hannah of stealing and turn immigration investigators toward Hannah’s mother, whose paperwork had once contained an error.
Clara stayed partly to protect a witness.
That choice was dangerous.
