Chapter 14 - ETHAN RETURNS TO SCHOOL
Returning home did not end Ethan’s disappearance.
For months, he hid food beneath his bed.
Refused haircuts.
Slept near the kitchen door.
Panicked around white coats.
Would not answer when teachers called attendance if they paused near his name.
David changed schools only after asking.
Ethan chose a small program with trauma-trained staff.
On the first day, the teacher said:
“Ethan Brooks?”
The boy raised his hand.
Then cried.
Not because he was afraid.
Because someone used the right name and waited for him to answer.
He kept the hospital wristband in a sealed evidence box.
At twelve, he asked to see it.
David brought the box.
Ethan held the band.
“Was Micah real?”
“Yes.”
“Did he get home?”
“Yes.”
“Did I steal his name?”
“No.”
“They made you wear it.”
Ethan looked relieved.
Children often carried guilt for things adults forced onto them.
He asked to meet Micah.
The families arranged it carefully.
The boys sat across from each other at a quiet park.
No cameras.
No reporters.
Micah was older.
Shy.
He looked at the wristband and said, “That used to be me.”
Ethan answered, “It helped them find you.”
The object had been used to erase one child and ended up recovering two.
