Chapter 2 - THREE DAYS MISSING
The official story began on Monday afternoon.
David worked as an emergency electrical supervisor for the county hospital system. A transformer failure knocked out power at two outpatient clinics, and he was called in before dawn.
His mother, Margaret Brooks, offered to watch Ethan.
She lived ten minutes away.
She had been difficult since David’s divorce, but reliable with schedules.
At least, he believed she was.
Margaret picked Ethan up at 6:30 a.m.
At 4:15 p.m., David returned home.
The house was empty.
His mother did not answer.
At 4:28, she called from a gas station forty miles north.
Her voice shook.
“Ethan ran away.”
David could not understand the sentence.
“From where?”
“A rest stop.”
“Why were you at a rest stop?”
“I took him to see someone.”
“Who?”
Margaret began crying.
She said Ethan became upset.
Said he ran toward the trees.
Said she searched.
Said a stranger saw a boy enter a gray van.
Police responded.
Dogs traced Ethan’s scent only twenty yards from the restroom before losing it near the parking lot.
The van story spread.
Amber alerts activated.
Volunteers arrived.
Margaret appeared on television holding Ethan’s school photograph and begging for his return.
David stood beside her.
He believed her.
At first.
Then Detective Sarah Monroe asked to see Margaret’s car.
She resisted.
Food wrappers.
Cleaning supplies.
A folded blanket.
Nothing illegal.
But the rear seat smelled strongly of disinfectant.
Margaret said she cleaned because Ethan became carsick.
No biological evidence remained.
The gas station camera created the first crack.
Margaret arrived alone.
No child entered the restroom.
No gray van passed during the relevant time.
When confronted, she said the timestamp must be wrong.
Then she stopped answering questions without an attorney.
By Tuesday evening, police no longer treated her only as a grieving grandmother.
By Wednesday, they searched her house.
Ethan’s backpack was hidden in the attic.
His sneakers were inside a sealed plastic bag.
The child remained missing.
Margaret was arrested for evidence concealment.
