Chapter 2 - The Wicked Interruption

The live orchestra at the back of the ballroom abruptly stopped playing. The silence that fell over the hundreds of elite guests was deafening.

Luca’s heart hammered against his ribs. For two agonizing years, ever since the tragic car accident that took his first wife’s life, top neurologists had sworn that Sophia’s spinal injuries were permanent. They had told the billionaire father that his little girl would never take another step.

Yet, here she was, standing on the polished marble floor, holding onto a weeping waitress as if her life depended on it.

Before Luca could even process the miraculous impossibility of the moment, the sharp, aggressive clicking of designer heels echoed across the floor.

Vanessa, Luca’s beautiful but notoriously cruel high-society fiancée, marched through the crowd. She wore a stunning, blood-red evening gown and a massive diamond engagement ring. To the public, she played the role of the loving future stepmother. Behind closed doors, she was a calculating, cold-blooded monster who despised the child.

When Vanessa saw Sophia out of her wheelchair and wrapped in the arms of a lowly catering employee, her flawless face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vanessa shrieked, completely dropping her sophisticated facade. "Security! Get this filthy woman away from my daughter! She’s attacking her!"

Two massive, suited bodyguards immediately stepped out of the shadows, marching toward Hannah and the little girl.

Hannah didn't run. She tightened her arms protectively around Sophia, glaring up at the charging guards with the fierce, unyielding bravery of a mother bear protecting a cub.
