Chapter 3 - The Recognition

"Stand down!"
Luca’s voice boomed across the ballroom like a crack of thunder. The cinematic, lethal authority in his tone stopped the two massive bodyguards dead in their tracks. They instantly stepped backward, lowering their hands and bowing their heads.
Vanessa’s face turned the color of wet chalk. "Luca, darling, what are you doing? This crazy waitress just assaulted Sophia! She dropped a tray of glass near a disabled child! She needs to be arrested!"
Luca completely ignored his shrieking fiancée.
He slowly walked forward, his highly polished black shoes stepping over the shattered glass of the dropped serving tray. He stopped just two feet away from where Hannah was kneeling on the floor with his daughter.
The intimidating, ruthless mafia boss dropped down to one knee, bringing himself right to eye level with the young woman in the black apron.
Hannah’s chest heaved. She expected him to rip Sophia from her arms. She expected to be thrown out into the alley and beaten by his enforcers.
But Luca just stared intensely at her face. He looked at her warm brown eyes, the messy strands of brunette hair escaping her updo, and the profound, undeniable love she was radiating toward his child.
Then, the realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest.
"I know you," Luca said, his deep voice dropping to a shaken, echoing whisper. "You aren't a waitress."
Hannah swallowed a heavy lump in her throat, her eyes filled with defensive tears.
