Chapter 8 - The Extraction Specialist

"Nine years ago," Judge Reed continued, turning to face the shocked cameras, "a trafficking network kidnapped hostages to finance their operations. Nova was part of a private, highly classified humanitarian unit contracted to extract those civilians when ordinary routes failed."

Ruth Mercer stepped forward, tears filling her eyes.

"She went into a burning warehouse alone," Ruth whispered, her voice trembling with profound emotion. "My granddaughter was one of the children she carried out. She suffered severe burns and shrapnel wounds to her wrist and ribs to shield my family. That is why she has the scars."

Ambassador Morel nodded heavily. "She saved my nephew. The records were federally sealed to protect her from retaliation by the cartels she dismantled. She isn't a criminal. She is a hero who simply wanted to live a quiet, ordinary life."

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing truth took the breath out of the entire room.

Brooke physically staggered backward behind the podium, all the color violently draining from her face. She had spent thousands of dollars to publicly expose a maid, only to accidentally reveal to the world that she had been bullying an internationally recognized savior of children.

Then, Grayson Cole stepped forward to the microphone.

"Nova carried three children out of that fire," Grayson stated softly, looking directly at the cameras. "I was one of the teenagers she went back for."
