Chapter 8 - The Cornered Animal
Victoria realized she was completely, utterly trapped. The elegant, sophisticated high-society woman vanished, replaced by a desperate, feral animal.
"No!" Victoria shrieked, lunging backward away from the table. "You can't do this to me! You owe me! I ran this house for three years!"
She spun around and bolted toward the grand double doors leading to the foyer, her expensive red off-the-shoulder gown dragging heavily behind her.
"Stop her!" one of the guests yelled.
Mr. Moretti didn't even move. He didn't chase her. He just stood behind his dead wife’s chair, watching the pathetic woman run.
Victoria reached the heavy wooden doors and grabbed the brass handles, violently yanking them open.
Standing immediately on the other side, blocking the entire doorway, were four massive, heavily armed security guards in black suits. Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers illuminated the massive glass windows of the mansion’s entrance.
Victoria let out a guttural, horrific scream of pure terror. She stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of her red gown, and collapsed onto the marble floor in an undignified, crying heap.
Two police detectives pushed past the security guards, handcuffs already drawn.
"Victoria Vance," the lead detective barked, grabbing her roughly by the arms and hauling her to her feet. "You are under arrest for the murder of Claire Moretti, and the aggravated assault of Madison Thorne. You have the right to remain silent, and I highly suggest you use it."
"Leo, please!" Victoria sobbed hysterically, thrashing against the officers as they snapped the cold steel around her wrists. "It was an accident! I didn't mean to give her so much! I just wanted her to be sick so I could take care of her! Please!"
Mr. Moretti stared at her, feeling absolutely zero pity.
