Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

Victoria’s hysterical screams echoed down the grand hallway, fading into the night as she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser. The wealthy dinner guests quietly and awkwardly excused themselves, fleeing the mansion as the estate officially became a massive crime scene.

When the house was finally empty of the elite crowd, Mr. Moretti let out a long, heavy, shuddering breath. The agonizing mystery that had tortured his soul for three years was finally solved. His wife hadn't just abandoned him. She had been stolen.

He walked slowly back to his private study and knocked gently on the heavy oak door.

"Madison, it's me. You can open the door."

The lock clicked, and the young maid peeked out. She was still clutching the melting ice pack to her bruised neck, her eyes red and puffy from crying.

Mr. Moretti stepped inside. The terrifying, intimidating aura of the billionaire was completely gone. He looked exhausted, vulnerable, and immensely grateful.

"They took her away," Mr. Moretti said softly. "The police dug up the box. The evidence is overwhelming. She will never see the outside of a prison cell for the rest of her life."

Madison let out a heavy sigh of absolute relief, her shoulders slumping. "I'm so sorry about your wife, sir."

"Don't be sorry," Mr. Moretti replied, stepping closer. "You gave me the truth. You gave my wife justice. You risked your own life to make sure a murderer didn't get away with it."
