Chapter 10

The heavy door of the armored SUV swung open with a slow, metallic creak. Ryan stood frozen in the moonlight, his weapon leveled, his heart hammering against his ribs in a chaotic rhythm. For six years, he had lived with the ghost of Isabella, carrying the guilt of her supposed death in a fire meant for him. Now, as a figure stepped out from the dark interior of the vehicle, the past collided violently with the present.

A woman emerged into the pale moonlight. She was tall, dressed in a sleek, dark trench coat. Her long, dark hair blew gently in the cool mountain breeze. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, untouched by the tragic fire that was supposed to have claimed her life.

It was Isabella.

She looked exactly as Ryan remembered, yet there was a profound, chilling emptiness in her eyes that hadn't been there six years ago. She didn't look like a captive. She didn't look frightened. She looked entirely in control.

"Hello, Ryan," Isabella said, her voice smooth and devoid of any warmth.

Ryan lowered his weapon a fraction of an inch, his ruggedly handsome face twisted in absolute disbelief. "Isabella... you’re alive. Dominic said he took you..."

Isabella let out a soft, mocking laugh that cut through the silence of the forest like a blade. "Dominic didn't take me, Ryan. Dominic works for me."

Dominic smirked, stepping back respectfully to give Isabella the floor.

Ryan’s broad shoulders tensed, the horrific realization crashing over him. The entire narrative was a lie. The girl in the walls, the tactical assault, the breach of his home—it hadn't been an attack by a rival syndicate trying to use his past against him. His past was the rival syndicate.

"You did this?" Ryan breathed, his masculine presence radiating a mixture of shock and rising fury. "You put our daughter inside those walls? You terrorized her?"

"Maya is a tool," Isabella replied coldly, stepping forward. "Just like you were a tool, Ryan. Six years ago, when the commission wanted to consolidate power, you were supposed to die in that fire. But you survived. And you took the empire that belonged to my family. You built your life on the ashes of my legacy."

"So you hid in the shadows," Ryan said, his voice dropping to a lethal growl. "You let me mourn you, you let me believe I got you killed, while you built a mercenary army in Chicago."

"I took what was mine," Isabella said, her eyes flashing with a vindictive fire. "And now, I am taking New York. Planting Maya in your house was the perfect distraction. You were so busy playing the panicked father that you didn't realize my men just seized your ports, your warehouses, and your entire distribution network while you fled to the woods."

Ryan’s grip on his pistol tightened. The legendary Mafia boss realized he had been completely outplayed. He had abandoned his city to protect his family, and in doing so, he had handed the keys to his kingdom to a ghost.

"You can have the city," Ryan said, his voice eerily calm and composed. "I don't care about the territory. But you will never touch Maya again. She is staying with me."

"I don't care about the child," Isabella sneered dismissively. "Keep her. But you aren't walking away from this, Ryan. A king can't just abdicate. He has to die."

Isabella raised a hand, signaling Dominic and the remaining mercenaries hiding in the treeline. Red laser sights instantly painted Ryan’s chest. He was completely exposed, vastly outnumbered, standing in the middle of the gravel driveway.

Down in the cellar, Emily sat perfectly still. Through the heavy steel hatch, she had heard the cessation of gunfire, followed by the muffled voices outside. Her perceptive mind knew exactly what it meant. The fighting had stopped, but Ryan hadn't come back to open the door. He was trapped.

Emily looked at Lily and Maya, both huddled safely together in the corner. Her beautiful face hardened with a fierce, unwavering resolve. She would not let the man she loved die alone in the dark.

Emily stood up, tightening her grip on her sleek pistol. She turned to the heavy steel deadbolts of the hatch.

Outside, Isabella smiled triumphantly at Ryan. "Any last words, Ryan?"

Ryan didn't lower his gun. He stared at the woman he once loved, his eyes cold and devoid of mercy. He prepared to pull the trigger, ready to take her with him in a final, glorious stand to ensure his daughters and his wife survived.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the cabin burst open with a deafening crash, and a figure stepped out into the moonlight, changing the entire balance of power in a single heartbeat.
