Chapter 7

The matte-black armored SUV tore out of the subterranean garage, its heavy reinforced tires screaming against the asphalt as it broke through the estate’s outer security gates. The iron bars shattered like kindling under the sheer force of the vehicle. Ryan gripped the steering wheel, his ruggedly handsome face set in an expression of pure, lethal focus. Beside him, Emily continually checked the rearview mirrors, her pistol resting on her lap in her fitted dark trousers.

In the back seat, Lily and Maya were huddled together beneath a thick blanket. Lily was holding Maya’s hand, her innocent face entirely brave, while Maya stared out the tinted windows at the passing trees, terrified of the outside world she hadn't seen in months.

"Where are we going?" Emily asked, keeping her voice low. "If Marcus flipped, all our safe houses are compromised."

"Not all of them," Ryan said, navigating the winding suburban roads at high speed. "There is a property in the Catskills. It’s not on any syndicate ledger. I bought it under a dummy corporation ten years ago before I took over the family. No one knows about it except Dr. Aris."

"Dr. Aris?" Emily questioned, raising a delicate eyebrow. "The underground surgeon?"

"He owes me his life," Ryan explained, checking his mirrors for any pursuing headlights. "He’s discreet, and we need him. I have to know for absolute certain who Maya is. I need a DNA test run tonight, and I need her examined. If she’s been living in walls, she needs a doctor."

Two hours later, the SUV pulled up a long, unpaved gravel driveway, stopping in front of a rustic but heavily fortified cabin hidden deep within the dense pine forests of the Catskills. The isolation was profound, the silence of the woods a stark contrast to the gunfire of the estate.

Ryan unlocked the heavy oak door, ushering his family inside. The cabin was fully stocked, powered by an off-grid generator. He immediately began closing the heavy steel shutters over the windows, plunging the interior into secure, defensible darkness.

An hour later, a quiet knock echoed at the door. Ryan opened it, his weapon drawn, allowing Dr. Aris to step inside. The elderly doctor carried a heavy black medical bag, his eyes widening slightly as he took in the sight of the legendary Mafia boss covered in dust, accompanied by his elegant wife and two small children.

"Ryan," Dr. Aris said, setting his bag down on the wooden dining table. "You look like you've been through a war."

"We are in one," Ryan replied, his broad shoulders tense. "I need a rapid DNA panel. Swab me, and swab the older girl."

Dr. Aris didn't ask questions. He approached Maya gently, speaking in soothing tones as he took a quick swab from the inside of her cheek, followed by one from Ryan. He loaded the samples into a portable, high-tech rapid analyzer he had brought from his clinic.

While the machine hummed, Dr. Aris conducted a brief physical exam on Maya. The little girl sat perfectly still on the edge of the sofa, her fair, rosy skin looking bruised and terribly pale under the cabin's warm lights.

"She is malnourished," Dr. Aris murmured to Emily, keeping his voice down. "Slight vitamin deficiencies, but nothing a proper diet won't fix. However..." The doctor paused, his eyes narrowing as he examined a faint, faded scar on the back of Maya’s neck.

"What is it?" Emily asked fiercely, stepping closer.

"This scar," Dr. Aris said, adjusting his glasses. "It’s a surgical mark. Highly specific. It’s used to implant localized tracking chips. The cartel out of Chicago uses them on high-value hostages."

Ryan stepped forward, his dark dress shirt clinging to his chest. "The Chicago syndicate? The Morettis?"

"Yes," Dr. Aris confirmed. "If Isabella survived the fire six years ago, it’s highly probable the Morettis pulled her out to use her against you."

The portable analyzer chimed loudly, interrupting the grim revelation. Dr. Aris walked over, reading the digital readout on the small screen. He looked up, his eyes meeting Ryan’s.

"It’s a ninety-nine point nine percent match, Ryan," Dr. Aris said quietly. "She is your biological daughter."

Ryan closed his eyes, the weight of the confirmation hitting him like a physical blow. He had another child. A daughter who had spent her entire life in captivity, used as a pawn in a war she didn't understand.

He walked over to the sofa and knelt in front of Maya. He didn't care about his ruined tailored suit. He reached out and gently took her small, fragile hands in his large, powerful ones.

"Maya," Ryan said, his voice thick with emotion, his strongly masculine presence softening into pure paternal devotion. "I am your father. And I promise you, on my life, you are never going back into the dark. I will protect you."

Maya looked at him, tears welling in her eyes. She leaned forward and wrapped her thin arms around his neck.

Suddenly, Maya pulled back, her eyes widening in panic. "Daddy... the man with the snake tattoo. He said if I found you, I had to tell you a secret."

Ryan frowned, exchanging a worried glance with Emily. "What secret, Maya?"

May you like

"He said to tell you," Maya whispered, her voice trembling, "that the fire wasn't meant for the house. The fire was meant for the cabin."

Ryan’s blood turned to ice. He looked up at Emily, realizing they hadn't escaped the trap. They had driven straight into the center of it.
