Chapter 8

The silence inside the cabin suddenly felt less like a sanctuary and more like a tomb. Ryan stood up, his towering, imposing frame casting a long shadow across the rustic wooden floor. His mind raced, calculating the terrifying implication of Maya’s words. If the Viper knew about the cabin, it meant Dr. Aris wasn't the only one who possessed its location. The inner circle of his syndicate was compromised on a level he hadn't imagined.
"Emily, get the girls to the reinforced cellar," Ryan commanded, his voice devoid of panic but laced with absolute, lethal urgency. "Dr. Aris, go with them. Do not open that hatch for anyone but me."
Emily didn't argue. She knew the protocol of survival better than anyone. She grabbed Lily’s hand and guided Maya gently by the shoulder. "Come on, girls. We’re going to play a hiding game downstairs."
"I want to stay with Daddy," Lily protested mildly, her pale-pink cardigan catching the dim light.
"Daddy has to work, sweetie," Emily said firmly, pulling her toward the heavy steel trapdoor hidden beneath a braided rug in the kitchen.
As they descended into the secure bunker, Emily stopped and looked back at Ryan. Her elegant cream blouse was stained, her hair slightly disheveled, but her perceptive eyes burned with a fierce, unwavering loyalty. "You bring this house down on them, Ryan. Do not hesitate."
"I won't," Ryan promised, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line.
He slammed the steel hatch shut, throwing the heavy deadbolts into place.
Alone in the dimly lit cabin, Ryan moved with the precision of a ghost. He systematically extinguished every light, plunging the interior into total darkness. He moved to the hidden armory cabinet built into the stone fireplace, retrieving a high-powered, suppressed tactical rifle and several extra magazines. He checked his gold watch; the glowing dials indicated it was nearly 3:00 AM.
He didn't have to wait long.
Outside, the crunch of heavy tires on the gravel driveway broke the stillness of the forest. Ryan positioned himself near a narrow viewing slit in the reinforced steel window shutters. Through the dense pine trees, he saw the faint, ghostly silhouettes of three tactical vehicles cutting their headlights as they approached.
They thought they had the element of surprise. They thought they had backed the legendary Mafia boss into a corner. They were horribly wrong.
Doors opened silently, and over a dozen heavily armed men in tactical black gear fanned out across the property, their laser sights cutting through the misty night air. They moved with military precision, signaling each other with hand gestures, slowly closing the net around the cabin.
Ryan didn't wait for them to breach the door. He understood the geometry of violence better than any man alive.
He aimed his rifle through the firing port, exhaled a slow, controlled breath, and squeezed the trigger. The suppressed weapon let out a sharp thwip. The lead attacker, standing near the front porch, immediately collapsed to the dirt, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the wood.
The remaining attackers scrambled for cover, instantly realizing they had lost the element of surprise.
"Light it up!" a muffled voice roared from the treeline.
A hail of suppressed gunfire erupted from the woods, bullets sparking and pinging uselessly against the heavy steel shutters of the cabin. Ryan remained calm and composed, moving fluidly between firing ports. He returned fire with devastating accuracy, dropping two more attackers who tried to flank the side of the cabin.
Inside the cellar, Emily sat on the cold concrete floor, holding Lily and Maya tightly in her arms. The muffled thuds of gunfire above sounded like distant thunder. Lily buried her face in Emily’s dark trousers, while Maya stared blankly at the ceiling, her small body trembling.
"It's okay," Emily whispered, kissing their foreheads repeatedly. "He’s protecting us. He won't let them in."
Dr. Aris sat in the corner, clutching his medical bag, his face pale. "Emily, if they breach the main floor, they will use thermite on this hatch. We are trapped."
"Have a little faith, Doctor," Emily said, her beautiful face hardened by a fierce, maternal resolve. She pulled her sleek pistol from her waistband and aimed it directly at the steel hatch above. "If they breach the floor, they still have to get through me."
Above them, the firefight intensified. Ryan was a force of nature, a one-man army defending his blood. But as he dropped his fourth target, a heavy, metallic clank echoed from the roof of the cabin.

Ryan looked up, his broad shoulders tensing. They weren't just trying to shoot their way in. They were planting a breach charge on the chimney stack to drop tear gas directly into the living room.
The fire wasn't a metaphor. They were literally going to smoke him out.
