silent

Chapter 5

The faint sound of breaking glass echoed up the grand staircase, a chilling confirmation that the perimeter of the estate had been compromised. Ryan stood perfectly still in the moonlight, his suppressed weapon raised, his broad shoulders squared toward the heavy mahogany door of the master suite. He was no longer just a father in a tailored suit; he was the apex predator of the city's underworld, and his territory had been breached.

Behind him, Emily crouched low against the floor, her arms wrapped tightly around Lily and Maya. The two little girls were trembling, their fair, rosy skin illuminated by the pale moonlight slipping through the windowpanes. Emily’s fitted dark trousers and cream blouse blended into the shadows as she pulled a small, sleek pistol from a hidden biometric safe mounted beneath the nightstand. She was beautiful and elegant, but she had married a Mafia boss, and she was fiercely protective of her family. She knew how to survive.

"Stay behind me," Emily whispered into Lily’s ear, kissing the top of her three-year-old's head. "Hold Maya's hand. Do not let go."

Lily whimpered softly but gripped Maya's hand with all her tiny strength. Maya squeezed back, her eyes wide with a terror she had known for far too long.

Ryan backed slowly toward Emily. "The main stairwell is a kill zone," he whispered, his voice calm and composed despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "If they disabled the generators, they own the security feeds. We are flying blind."

"The panic room?" Emily suggested, racking the slide of her pistol with a soft click.

"It's in the basement," Ryan said, shaking his head. "They came through the ground floor. We'd be walking right into them." He looked toward the heavy walk-in closet at the far end of the room. "The secondary escape chute. It drops into the underground garage. We take the armored SUV and break through the gate."

Suddenly, heavy, muffled footsteps padded down the hallway outside their door. They were moving with tactical precision—slow, deliberate, and silent.

Ryan held up a hand, signaling Emily to stay down. He aimed his weapon directly at the center of the mahogany door.

"Boss?" a low, urgent voice whispered from the other side of the wood. "Boss, it's Marcus. Are you in there?"

Emily exhaled a breath of relief and started to stand, but Ryan violently shoved his hand down, forcing her back to the floor. His eyes were wide, a terrifying realization dawning on his ruggedly handsome face.

"Marcus was stationed at the outer perimeter tonight," Ryan mouthed silently to Emily. "He shouldn't be inside the house."

"Boss, the generators are down," Marcus’s voice continued through the door, sounding entirely calm. "We have a breach in the east wing. I need to get you and the family to the safe room. Open the door."

Ryan didn't say a word. He stepped to the side of the doorframe, aligning himself with the solid wall rather than the wood.

"Marcus," Ryan called out, his voice steady and commanding. "What is the primary authentication code?"

A long, suffocating silence followed. The code changed daily; only Ryan and his true loyalists knew it.

"Come on, Ryan," Marcus’s voice dropped the respectful tone, turning cold and arrogant. "Don't make this harder than it has to be. Open the door, or we blow the hinges."

The traitor had revealed himself.

"Get to the closet!" Ryan yelled.

At that exact second, the mahogany door splintered inward as a localized breaching charge detonated. The concussive blast blew the heavy wood off its hinges, sending smoke and debris flying into the master suite.

Ryan didn't flinch. He leaned out from cover and fired three rapid, suppressed shots into the smoke-filled doorway. He heard two heavy thuds as bodies hit the floor.

"Move! Now!" Ryan shouted, laying down covering fire.

Emily didn't hesitate. She grabbed Lily and Maya, practically dragging the two terrified girls across the plush carpet toward the massive walk-in closet. The tactical team in the hallway returned fire, the suppressed weapons making a lethal thwip-thwip-thwip sound as bullets tore through the expensive wallpaper and shattered the lamps on the nightstands.

Ryan provided a relentless wall of lead, forcing the attackers to stay pinned in the hallway. He backed into the closet, slamming the heavy reinforced steel door shut and throwing the manual deadbolt just as a spray of bullets pinged against the metal exterior.

Inside the dark closet, Emily was already pulling away a section of the custom shelving, revealing a dark, smooth metal chute designed for emergency evacuation.

"Emily, you go first," Ryan ordered, ejecting his spent magazine and slapping a fresh one into his weapon. The steel door behind him shuddered as Marcus’s men began battering it. "Take the girls. I’ll hold them here."

"I am not leaving you!" Emily fiercely replied, her intelligent eyes blazing in the dark.

"You have to!" Ryan demanded, his strongly masculine presence leaving no room for argument. "If they get Maya, they burn this house to the ground and use her to take my entire empire. You protect our daughters, Emily. Go!"

Emily looked at the man she loved, her heart breaking, before grabbing Maya and Lily and pushing them into the dark descent of the escape chute.
