Chapter 3 - The Ghost's Name

The heavy, warm California breeze rustled through the lush manicured gardens, but the atmosphere on the driveway suddenly felt incredibly dense.

A tight close-up captured Sophie lifting her chin with complete, unwavering seriousness. She held her ground without taking a single step back, refusing to break eye contact with the towering man kneeling in front of her.

"Sophie Carter," she announced, her voice ringing out proud and completely confident. "I'm five and a half."

An extreme close-up focused entirely on Dante’s handsome face.

The cinematic realism of the moment was absolutely devastating. Dante’s amused, gentle smirk instantly vanished, violently wiped from his face. All the color rapidly drained from his cheeks. His dark eyes widened in a frozen, breathless look of sheer, apocalyptic shock.

He stared deeply into the little girl's fierce blue eyes, suddenly recognizing the exact, stubborn shape of her jawline.

"Carter..." Dante whispered, his voice cracking, entirely breathless.

To understand the absolute, crushing magnitude of that name, one had to look back exactly six years. Dante hadn't always been a cold, isolated mafia boss. He had been deeply, intensely in love with a beautiful, brilliant woman named Clara Carter. They were secretly engaged, entirely hidden from the violent criminal underworld.

But one night, Clara’s apartment was aggressively raided by a rival cartel looking for leverage against Dante. Dante arrived too late. The apartment was burned to the ground. The police told Dante that Clara had died in the fire.

He had spent the last six years completely hollow, burning his way to the top of the syndicate to avenge the only woman he ever loved.

But looking at the five-year-old girl in the purple floral dress, the impossible, world-shattering mathematical reality hit him like a freight train.
