Chapter 4 - The Mother's Panic

"Sophie!" a frantic, desperate voice echoed through the massive wrought iron gates.
Dante physically flinched. He slowly raised his head, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.
Running up the polished stone driveway was an elegant woman in her early thirties. She had long, beautiful wavy brown hair and was wearing a sharp, tailored white blazer over a simple black dress. She was hyperventilating, completely terrified that her five-year-old daughter had just wandered into a billionaire's heavily gated private estate.
It was Clara.
A wide shot captured the suffocating, paralyzing tension as Clara sprinted toward them. But as she got closer, she finally saw the face of the man kneeling on the driveway.
Clara stopped completely dead in her tracks. Her expensive white blazer suddenly felt like a suffocating straightjacket. The terrified mother instantly shifted into absolute, unadulterated panic. She didn't see the man she loved; she saw the ruthless, terrifying mafia boss she had spent six years desperately hiding from.
"Dante," Clara gasped, her voice barely a terrified whisper.
Dante slowly stood up from his knee, towering over the driveway in his mauve suit. The sheer, overwhelming grief and the massive, crushing betrayal violently collided in his dark eyes.
Clara didn't hesitate. She aggressively lunged forward, grabbing Sophie’s small hand and forcefully yanking the little girl behind her white blazer, placing her body entirely between her daughter and the powerful syndicate boss.
"Don't you dare touch her," Clara hissed, her voice radiating absolute, fierce maternal protection.
Dante didn't draw a weapon. He didn't signal his guards. He simply stared at the woman he thought had burned to ash six years ago.
