Chapter 1 - The Reluctant Giant

"Boss. We have a situation."

The massive, heavily armed security chief stepped onto the polished maple floor of my small dance studio. He didn't look at me. He looked directly at Gabriel Moretti, the most feared, ruthless mafia boss in Chicago.

Gabriel’s expression instantly hardened into a mask of pure, lethal stone. "What situation?"

The guard lowered his voice into a tense whisper. "Someone found out where you've been spending your Thursdays."

I frowned, completely confused. I stood there in my dance shoes, my copper-red hair tied back. "Thursdays? This is his very first lesson."

But Gabriel went perfectly, terrifyingly still. The cinematic tension in the room instantly spiked to an apocalyptic level. He didn't look at his guard. His dark, calculating eyes slowly turned toward the large, frosted glass windows at the front of my studio.

And when I followed his gaze, my heart physically stopped.

Through the blurred glass, parked directly across the street, was a sleek, armored black SUV. Standing beside it were three men in tailored grey suits. Even through the frosting, I could see the terrifying, unmistakable silhouette of a sniper rifle resting against the hood, aimed directly at my studio doors.

Gabriel hadn't been taking a dance lesson. He had been using my studio as a highly fortified, secure meeting point, completely orchestrating a massive cartel war under the guise of an eighty-year-old woman's birthday gift.

"Get away from the windows, Claire," Gabriel commanded. His voice wasn't an arrogant complaint about learning the waltz anymore. It was a cold, absolute, and deadly order.

👉 I thought I was just a dance instructor, but Gabriel’s next move would drag me completely into the crossfire.
