Chapter 1 - The Child in the Wolf’s Den

The heavy mahogany doors of Alessandro Moretti’s private office were strictly off-limits. Men in the Chicago underworld had lost their lives just for walking in unannounced.

Inside the magnificent room, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and bulletproof glass, sat the city's most feared Mafia boss. At thirty-nine, Alessandro was exceptionally handsome but terrifying, with thick black hair slicked back and piercing, cold gray eyes. Dark tattoos crawled up his muscular neck and across his chest, visible beneath his partially unbuttoned white dress shirt and expensive black suit.

Following a violent, near-fatal ambush six months ago, Alessandro was currently confined to a sophisticated black wheelchair. His physical limitation only made him more ruthless, more guarded, and intensely paranoid.

But right now, the apex predator was completely frozen.

Standing right beside his black wheelchair was a tiny, fearless intruder. Emma, an adorable three-year-old girl with golden-blonde curls, bright blue eyes, and rosy cheeks, looked up at him. She wore a pale-yellow floral princess dress with puffed sleeves.

She wasn't crying. She wasn't terrified. Instead, she happily held a small china plate in her hands. She reached up, pressing a half-eaten butter cookie directly toward the intimidating boss’s mouth.

"Here! You eat it!" Emma said, her sweet, innocent voice echoing in the dead silence of the office as she smiled brightly.

Alessandro stared down at her in absolute disbelief. His sharp jawline locked. No one spoke to him like that. No one dared to touch him. He opened his mouth to call his armed guards to immediately remove the child.
