Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Question

The air in the grand luxury ballroom turned to absolute ice.
The playful, curious atmosphere instantly evaporated, replaced by a suffocating, lethal tension. Dante’s natural breathing ceased. The man who had survived cartel wars and corporate assassinations felt his entire world violently tilt on its axis.
He didn't see a sweet toddler anymore. He saw a key to a locked door he thought had been permanently welded shut.
His expression transformed from surprise into sudden, intense seriousness. His eyes narrowed sharply, locking onto the little girl with the blue lace dress and curly brown hair. The tattoos on his neck strained as he leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly demanding register.
"Who is your mother?" Dante demanded, every single syllable dripping with dangerous, unfiltered urgency.
Across the room, Marcus stopped smiling. The arrogant smirk vanished from his face as a creeping, unnatural panic began to take hold of him. He stared at the little girl, his eyes widening in sudden horror as his brain made a connection he had spent millions of dollars trying to bury.
