Chapter 4 - This Is Where It Starts

He moved toward the sink.

Amara stepped between him and the phone.

His rage came back, but it had lost shape.

Men like Draven were dangerous when they believed fear was private.

Recorded fear confused them.

He reached for her again.

She did not strike this time.

She angled away, kept distance, and said loudly, “Sergeant Draven, do not touch me.”

The body camera captured everything.

His hand stopping.

His eyes flicking to the blinking light.

The locked door behind him.

The mirror.

The phone.

Her voice.

Clear.

Controlled.

Then someone knocked on the restroom door.

“Sergeant?”

It was Reeves.

Draven froze.

Another voice followed.

“Bennett? You okay?”

Tasha’s warning rang in Amara’s mind.

Don’t be alone with him.

She had not told anyone where she was going.

But Reeves had seen Draven follow her.

And unlike the others before him, Reeves had chosen not to look away.

Amara kept her eyes on Draven.

“Unlock the door.”

He did not move.

She said louder, “Sergeant Draven locked the door.”

The hallway went silent.

Then Reeves hit the door with one palm.

“Open it.”

Draven hissed, “You are finished.”

Amara looked straight into the camera.

“No,” she said. “This is where it starts.”

Draven unlocked the door.

Reeves stood outside with two recruits behind him.

One was pale.

One had her phone out, not recording, just ready.

Everyone looked from Draven to Amara.

Then to the blinking camera.

Reeves asked, “Are you hurt?”

Amara’s arm throbbed.

Her chest burned from adrenaline.

Her hands were shaking now that the immediate danger had opened into witnesses.

“Yes,” she said. “But I’m standing.”

That sentence traveled through the academy faster than the official report.
