Chapter 5 - The Footage Showed Everything
By noon, internal affairs had the footage.
By 2:00 p.m., Sergeant Draven was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
Not because the academy suddenly became brave.
Because video left them fewer places to hide.
The footage showed the door lock.
The mirror slam.
The arm grab.
The attempted slap.
Amara’s wrist control.
One punch.
His second lunge.
One front kick.
Then the blinking camera.
Then his panic.
Draven tried the usual defenses.
Training intensity.
Misunderstanding.
Recruit aggression.
Disrespect.
He claimed Amara had attacked him after being corrected.
Then the footage showed his hand raised first.
He claimed the door locked accidentally.
Then the audio captured the hard metallic click and Amara asking why.
He claimed he was testing her composure.
The review board asked why the test happened inside a locked restroom with no witnesses.
He had no good answer.
After the footage was preserved, Maya Ellis came forward.
Then Tasha Nguyen.
Then two male recruits who admitted Draven had bragged about “breaking the soft ones.”
Then an assistant instructor who had heard rumors and done nothing.
That phrase appeared again and again.
Did nothing.
Amara hated that phrase more than the bruises on her arm.
Because “did nothing” had protected Draven longer than strength ever could.
Draven’s misconduct investigation uncovered a wider pattern.
Targeting.
Retaliation.
Improper isolation of recruits.
Unreported use-of-force incidents disguised as training corrections.
A broken reporting system that asked recruits to complain to people who golfed with the man they feared.
Draven was terminated.
Later, charges followed from the restroom assault and other documented incidents.
But Amara did not feel victorious when she heard.
