Chapter 2 - The Collision

To understand the absolute, suffocating weight of those thirty-eight dollars, you had to understand how Rosie and I ended up in this freezing city.

Four years earlier, my husband had packed a single duffel bag and abandoned us. He promised he was going to Chicago to find better work and secure our future. He never returned. He never called. He never sent a single penny. Since that day, I had worked until the skin on my hands physically cracked and bled, refusing to accept charity, swallowing every daily humiliation just to keep a roof over my daughter’s head.

Every December, I brought Rosie to Bergman’s. We never bought anything. But for exactly thirty magical minutes, standing beneath the towering Christmas trees and massive crystal chandeliers, my daughter could pretend she was a princess.

As Rosie finished her sketch, I gently took her hand. I turned around quickly, and we nearly collided directly into a towering stranger dressed entirely in a flawless, custom-tailored black suit.

Two massive, terrifying men in dark coats immediately rushed forward, aggressively placing themselves between the stranger and my daughter.

"Watch where you're going!" one of the massive bodyguards snapped viciously.

"Enough."

The stranger raised a single, heavily tattooed hand. Both of his massive guards instantly froze, dropping their aggressive posture entirely.

"I'm terribly sorry," I gasped, instinctively pulling Rosie closer to my leg, terrified by the sheer, imposing aura of the men surrounding us.

👉 The terrifying stranger looked down at my exhausted face, and his next action would completely shatter my reality.
