Chapter 4 - The Champagne Toast

Dominic slowly straightened his posture. He didn't yell. He didn't signal his armed guards to arrest her on the spot. The terrifying, cinematic realism of his sheer, unbreakable calm was far worse than any violent outburst.

He gave Elena a slow, almost imperceptible nod of respect.

Dominic smoothly buttoned his black double-breasted suit and walked gracefully over to Chloe.

"Darling," Dominic smiled, offering his fiancé a look of absolute, manufactured warmth. "You look incredibly beautiful tonight."

Chloe let out a breathless, nervous laugh, desperately trying to regain her composure. She took a large sip from her champagne glass to hide her trembling hands. "Thank you, Dominic. The gala is absolutely perfect. What was that maid bothering you about?"

"Just a minor staffing issue," Dominic lied smoothly, reaching out to gently touch her bare shoulder. "In fact, I have to step into my office for a quick international call. Will you be alright mingling for twenty minutes?"

Chloe’s eyes lit up with a sudden, greedy flash of excitement. This was exactly the window of opportunity she needed.

"Of course, darling," Chloe purred, offering a fake, loving smile. "Take your time. I'll just be right here with the mayor."
