Chapter 13 - THE EMPLOYEE VOTE

Richardson’s restructuring included employee profit-sharing revision. Why?
Outside investors wanted retention. Rebecca Hall proposed broadening incentive pool previously concentrated among family executives.
Charles resisted initially. Then accepted.
Employees voted through plan under governance process. Julian received no special family override.
He participated as one employee. That humbled him.
Then one marina manager asked him publicly: “Are you staying because you believe in company or because you think family gets it back?” Julian answered: “Because I work here.”
Good. Then a whistleblower report surfaced.
Not scandalous. One procurement vendor owned by Charles’s cousin received favorable terms.
Old family habit. Independent audit.
Contract repriced. No huge crime.
Governance working. Then I saw how systems prevent future drama better than revenge.
Then Northstar sold part of its preferred position to pension fund. Reduced concentration.
Why? We did not want permanent entanglement with my personal history.
Good investment discipline. Then I asked investment committee whether personal reason disqualified sale.
They said economics also supported. Fine.
Then one analyst joked: “Can we add relationship risk to underwriting model?” I glared. Then laughed. Maybe.
Then I started therapy. Not because shove only.
Because I had built identity around never needing anyone. Secret wealth. Private structures. Control.
Julian’s betrayal confirmed worst instinct. Therapist challenged.
“If nobody knows enough to hurt you, nobody knows enough to truly join you.” Annoying.
True. Then I took a year. Worked. Sailed again.
First time back on yacht after incident was difficult. Different boat.
Safety drill. Life jacket.
I stood at rail. Heart raced.
Then stayed. No dramatic triumph.
Just did not leave. Then I learned to swim in open water more confidently.
Practical response to fear. Then Eleanor completed community service.
She later wrote: I understand now why pushing someone near water is not “just a shove.” Obvious. Still. No response.
Then Charles retired fully. Julian’s family influence shrank.

The company did not collapse. That was the lesson they needed.
Family control had felt synonymous with survival because they never tested life without it. Now they did. And survived.
