Chapter 4 - JULIAN’S FIRST LIE

Julian asked to meet. I agreed only with Maya present in the next room and the conversation recorded with notice.
He arrived without his parents. He looked exhausted.
“Did you know who I was before we met?” He stared at the floor. “Yes.” There.
No long denial. That almost made it worse.
“How much?” “I knew you controlled Northstar.” “Through what?” “Owen.”
“How did you know Owen?” “Dad introduced us.”
Then the charity event. Julian admitted he had been encouraged to meet me.
Not seduce exactly. Build rapport.
Understand whether I was aggressive toward Richardson debt. He thought it was ridiculous.
Then we talked. He liked me.
Asked me out again. “Did you tell them?”
“No.” “Did you tell me?” “No.” “Why?”
“Because then you’d think every date was fake.” I laughed.
“Wasn’t the first one?” He looked sick. “Yes.” There.
Then he said the relationship became real. I believed that.
That did not help. Then the debt restructuring.
Julian said he knew there were negotiations but did not know the side letter terms until three months earlier. When he saw his own proxy rights, he objected.
Did he refuse? No.
Why? Because if Northstar took control, his father could lose the company and thousands of employees might face disruption. Again. Family survival.
Then Eleanor. Did she know I owned Northstar? “Yes.” How long?
“Before the yacht.” How long before?
“Months.” Then her class insults were strategic. Why? Julian hesitated.
“She wanted you to feel like an outsider.” “So I wouldn’t ask questions?” “Yes.” There.
Humiliation as containment. Then I asked about the yacht.
Why bring me? Eleanor insisted.
Why? To pressure Julian into ending relationship before restructuring closed.
That was the real reason for the lunch. They wanted me out before Northstar discovered side arrangements.
Then the shove. Did Eleanor intend to throw me overboard?
Julian said no. “She wanted to scare you.”
Wrong outcome. Still her action.
Then the folder. Whose?
Charles’s. He carried it onboard to review with Julian after I left.
Then why did it fall into sea? It had been on a side table near rail when Eleanor shoved me.
My fall knocked a chair, which hit table, which sent folder over. Accident.
No planted evidence. Good.
Then I asked: “Why didn’t you help me?” He closed his eyes.
That was separate from finance. No Owen. No debt. No family plan.
“I froze.” “You looked away before she shoved me too.”
“I was angry.” “At me?”
“At everything.” “Then after?”
“I was ashamed.” “Still didn’t move.” “No.” There.
He failed physically before he failed verbally. Then: “Why did you tell police you didn’t see?”
He said: “Because Mom begged me.” That was the final answer.
He protected her over truth. Again.
Then he asked: “Do you think there’s any chance for us?” I looked at him. “No.” He nodded. No persuasion. Good.
Then he said one more thing. “Owen is not just your manager.”
“What?” “He owns part of Richardson debt personally through another fund.”
That was prohibited if undisclosed. Conflict.
Then Julian produced an email. Owen to Charles: Family can keep control if Sienna stays emotionally aligned.
Emotionally aligned. My relationship had become a covenant.
May you like
Then I realized Julian had known enough to warn me for months and chose not to. Whatever love existed had been wrapped around a financial conflict from the beginning.
I did not need to decide whether love was real. I needed to decide whether trust was. It wasn’t.
