Chapter 6

"What do you mean, in the operating room?" Vanessa demanded, her voice wavering. She looked from her sister to her husband. "Ethan? What is she talking about?"
Ethan couldn't speak. His throat felt as if it had been packed with sand. He stared at Claire, his mind racing through a Rolodex of suppressed files, altered charts, and whispered threats in the hospital corridors.
"Let’s not bore the extended family with medical jargon, Vanessa," Claire said, placing her phone face-down on the table. She picked up her wineglass and took a slow, deliberate sip of water. "Let’s stick to the business at hand. The business of family."
"Claire, darling," Margaret suddenly cooed. The terrifying, rapid shift in her mother’s tone made Claire’s stomach churn. The haughty matriarch had vanished, replaced by a desperate, fawning woman. Margaret leaned forward, pressing her hands against her chest. "If you... if you truly are the head of Apex... why didn't you tell us? We are family! We could have celebrated together! We could have... partnered."
Claire set her glass down. The soft clink echoed loudly. "Partnered, Mother?"
"Yes!" Margaret nodded eagerly, ignoring the disgusted scoff from Grandma Evelyn. "Your father’s real estate firm, your capital—we could have built an empire together! Why hide in the shadows?"
"I didn't hide," Claire said. "I incorporated Apex Facilities Management ten years ago. I hired fifty people. I scaled it to five hundred. Then five thousand. I bought out failing logistical chains. I acquired debt. I turned it into equity. I worked eighty-hour weeks for a decade."
She looked at her mother, her eyes devoid of any daughterly warmth. "And every Thanksgiving, every Christmas, every Sunday dinner, I sat at this table while you told your friends I was a 'cleaning lady' because you couldn't be bothered to understand a business that required getting your hands dirty. You didn't want a partner, Margaret. You wanted a prop to make Vanessa look better."
Vanessa flushed bright red. "That is not true! We just... we worried about you!"
"You laughed at me, Vanessa," Claire corrected her, her voice smooth and devoid of anger, which somehow made it infinitely worse. "Ten minutes ago, you giggled when your husband told me to get better bleach. Don't rewrite history just because you suddenly realize I can afford to buy the publishing house."
Richard cleared his throat, adjusting his burgundy tie. He was trying to salvage his pride, attempting to look like a patriarch negotiating a deal rather than a man facing financial ruin. "Claire, listen. The hostile takeover of my firm. It’s aggressive. It’s unnecessary. We can handle this internally. Keep it in the family. Withdraw the injunction, and we can discuss a merger."
Claire turned her slow, heavy gaze to her father. "A merger implies you have something of equal value to offer, Richard. You don't. Your commercial properties are hemorrhaging cash because you refused to update the infrastructure. The buildings are rotting from the inside out."
She leaned forward slightly, resting her forearms on the table.
"I didn't launch the takeover to destroy you," Claire said softly. "I launched it because you are a liability. I am buying your firm for parts. I will gut the management, liquidate the bad assets, and rebuild it properly."
Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. "You... you would gut your own father’s company?"
"It’s just business," Claire said, echoing a phrase Richard had used against his own brothers years ago. She saw the recognition flash in his eyes.
"You little..." Margaret started, her desperation turning instantly back into venom.
"Careful, Margaret," Grandma Evelyn warned from the corner. She finally walked forward, her heels clicking sharply on the floor. She moved to stand behind Claire’s chair, placing one frail but steady hand on Claire’s shoulder. It was a picture of absolute solidarity.

"She is not a little anything," Evelyn said, looking down at her daughter. "She is the only one in this room who inherited my spine. Now, shut your mouth and listen to her. Because I believe she isn't finished with the surgeon."
Every eye snapped back to Ethan.
