Chapter 9

Ethan stared at Claire, his mouth slightly open, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The choice hung in the air, a pair of steel jaws waiting to snap shut. Public ruin and federal prison, or a quiet, permanent exile from the only identity he had ever cared about.
"You can't ask him to do that," Vanessa whispered fiercely, dropping her hands from her face. Her makeup was smeared, tears cutting tracks through her foundation. "Claire, his whole life is medicine! If he loses his license, he’s nothing!"
"He should have thought about that before he let Mrs. Gable bleed out on the table to make his tee time," Grandma Evelyn said from behind Claire, her voice completely devoid of pity.
"Shut up, you old bat!" Margaret screamed, completely losing the last shred of her cultivated elegance.
Evelyn didn't even blink. She just smiled, a cold, terrifying expression that showed exactly where Claire had inherited her ruthless composure.
"Margaret, shut your mouth," Richard snapped, rubbing his temples. He looked at Ethan. The patriarch saw the writing on the wall. "Ethan. Take the deal. Resign."
"Richard!" Vanessa cried, turning on her father. "How can you say that? We won't have any income! We have a mortgage! We have the country club fees!"
"Vanessa, listen to me," Richard said, his voice dropping to a harsh, desperate hiss. "She has my company. She has his hospital. The money is gone. If he goes to prison, he takes us all down with him. The feds will start looking at how I financed your house. He has to resign."
Ethan looked at his father-in-law, a look of pure, venomous betrayal flashing in his eyes. The alliance of the arrogant was crumbling, dissolving the moment their survival was threatened.
"You're throwing me to the wolves," Ethan sneered, his hands balling into fists. He looked at Margaret, then at Richard. "After everything I've done for the 'prestige' of this family. I gave you VIP treatment. I covered up Margaret’s 'vitamin' prescriptions. And now you're telling me to fall on my sword?"
"Don't you dare bring my prescriptions into this!" Margaret hissed, her face going pale.
"Why not?" Ethan laughed, a manic, hysterical sound that sent shivers down the spines of the silent relatives watching the spectacle. "If we're burning it down, let's burn it all down!"
He turned his manic gaze back to Claire. She sat entirely unmoved by the chaos exploding around her. Her breathing was natural, her face an unreadable mask. She was the eye of the storm, perfectly calm while the hurricane she created tore her family to shreds.
"You think you're God, don't you?" Ethan spat, taking a step toward her. "Sitting there in your cheap black blazer, pulling the strings. You think making me resign makes you a hero? You're just a corporate vulture."
"I'm not a hero, Ethan," Claire said softly, not breaking eye contact. "I'm a janitor. I clean up messes. And you are a massive, bloody mess."
She placed both hands flat on the table and pushed her chair back. The scrape of the wood was loud, final. Claire stood up. She wasn't particularly tall, but at that moment, she seemed to tower over everyone in the room. She smoothed the front of her blazer.
"You have until midnight to email your resignation to Marcus Vance," Claire said, her tone indicating that the conversation was officially over. "If the email is not in his inbox by 12:01 AM, the files go to the prosecutor. I suggest you spend the rest of your Thanksgiving drafting it."
"Claire, wait," Richard said, standing up quickly, reaching a hand out toward her. "Where are you going? We still need to discuss the real estate firm. We need to work out a severance—"
"Speak to my lawyers, Richard," Claire interrupted, picking up her black clutch. "I have nothing left to say to you."
She turned away from the table, facing the grand arched doorway of the dining room.

"You're a monster," Vanessa sobbed, sinking to the floor in a heap of champagne silk.
Claire paused. She didn't look back. "Happy Thanksgiving, Vanessa."
