Chapter 1 - The Thing Inside The Pillow

Marcus Hale heard his daughter scream before he reached her bedroom doorway.

Not cry.

Not call for him.

Scream.

He had just come down the dark upstairs hallway when the sound tore through the house.

“PLEASE… STOP IT!”

Marcus ran.

The bedroom was bright compared with the hallway outside—teal walls, white furniture, late-afternoon daylight washing across the bed.

Elsie sat near the edge of the room.

Eight years old.

Blonde hair pulled into a low ponytail.

Mint-green T-shirt.

Tears streaming down her face.

And standing beside her was Vivian.

A hot hair straightener was clamped around one thin section of Elsie’s blonde hair.

The heated plates were nowhere near Elsie’s scalp or skin.

But the strand between them suddenly sizzled.

The ends darkened.

Then turned visibly black.

Charred.

Elsie screamed again.

Vivian released the straightener.

She turned toward the door.

And almost walked straight into Marcus.

His expression changed instantly.

“What the hell—”

Vivian tried to move past him.

Marcus shoved her aside once.

Hard enough that she stumbled backward and fell onto the white bed.

“STAY AWAY FROM HER!”

No second shove.

No other attack.

Marcus rushed directly to Elsie.

He dropped to his knees.

“Elsie.”

His hands shook as he checked her face first.

No burns.

No marks on her skin.

Then her hair.

One thin section remained blackened at the ends.

His voice softened immediately.

“Elsie, what’s happening?”

She was crying too hard to answer at first.

Marcus steadied her by the shoulders.

“I’m here.”

Elsie looked past him.

Toward the bed.

Then she suddenly raised one hand and pointed.

“DADDY…”

Marcus followed her finger.

“IT’S INSIDE THE PILLOW.”

He turned.

One of the white pillows on the bed had a tear along its side seam.

Stuffing bulged through the opening.

Marcus crossed to it.

Vivian had gotten back to her feet several paces away.

She wasn’t yelling anymore.

That was the first thing Marcus noticed.

He reached into the torn pillow.

His fingers touched something hard.

Tiny.

He pulled it out.

A small black microchip rested between his fingertips.

No larger than part of his thumbnail.

Marcus stared at it.

Then at Elsie.

Then back toward Vivian.

Vivian’s entire face changed.

The anger vanished.

So did the defiance.

Her eyes widened.

Her lips parted.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised that there was something inside the pillow.

Terrified that Marcus had found it.

“What is this?” Marcus asked.

Vivian said nothing.

The straightener remained where she had left it.

Elsie’s burned strand remained visible.

The torn pillow stayed open.

The black chip remained between Marcus’s fingers.

And Vivian stood frozen beside the bed, looking at that tiny piece of plastic as if it could destroy her life.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Elsie was still crying.

But now she was watching Vivian too.

And Marcus suddenly realized something worse than what he had walked in on.

Elsie already knew the chip mattered.

May you like

Which meant whatever was hidden on it had begun long before he opened that bedroom door.
