Chapter 5 - The Microchip Was From A Hidden Recorder

Marcus did not plug the chip into anything himself.

He contacted a digital-forensics specialist through his attorney.

The specialist identified it as a miniature removable memory module commonly used in compact recording devices.

Not exotic.

Not spy-movie technology.

A tiny storage component.

The kind that could hold hours of compressed audio.

“Was there a recorder inside the pillow?” Marcus asked.

“Probably at some point.”

“But only the memory component remains.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Someone may have removed the recorder and missed the storage module. Or the storage was placed separately.”

Marcus remembered the torn seam.

Vivian’s terror.

Elsie saying Vivian told her not to touch it.

The specialist created a forensic copy before opening the data.

The first recovered file was dated four months earlier.

Marcus sat beside his attorney while they listened.

At first:

Nothing.

Bed sheets moving.

A child breathing.

Then Elsie’s voice.

“Vivian?”

Another voice answered from close to the recorder.

“What now?”

“I can’t sleep.”

“You’re eight.”

“I had the dream again.”

“About your mother?”

Silence.

Then Elsie crying.

Vivian’s voice sharpened.

“Stop it.”

“I miss her.”

“You do this every time Marcus leaves.”

“I want Dad.”

“You always want Dad when you want attention.”

The audio continued.

No physical violence.

Something quieter.

Vivian repeatedly told Elsie that crying would make Marcus tired of her.

That if she wanted him to remarry and be happy, she needed to stop “acting damaged.”

Marcus stopped the recording.

His attorney asked if he wanted a break.

“No.”

They kept listening.

Hours of audio.

Enough to change everything.
