For several days, Marcus could not understand the hair incident.
Why that?
Why use a straightener?
Why escalate from emotional manipulation to something physically frightening?
Elsie eventually explained in therapy.
Three days after discovering the object in the pillow, she saw Vivian cutting open the seam again.
Elsie asked:
“What’s that black thing?”
Vivian told her it was trash.
Elsie said:
“I’m telling Dad.”
Vivian answered:
“He’ll think you’re making up another story.”
The argument continued.
On the day Marcus came home, Vivian had been straightening her own hair in the guest bathroom when Elsie confronted her again.
“I’m gonna show Daddy.”
Vivian followed her into the bedroom.
Took the straightener with her.
Then grabbed a strand of Elsie’s hair.
Not her skin.
Not her face.
The hair.
She clamped it.
Held it long enough to burn the ends.
The message was unmistakable.
Silence has consequences.
Vivian later claimed she “never intended physical injury.”
The distinction did not help her.
She intentionally used a hot object to terrorize a child.
The fact that Elsie’s skin remained safe was fortunate.
Not exculpatory.
The event also destroyed Vivian’s argument that the recordings were neutral documentation.
