Chapter 2

Rachel crossed the room in three strides, standing protectively beside the hospital bed. The bright overhead clinical lighting cast sharp shadows across the room. Abigail looked up, her slow eye movement reflecting deep trauma. She reached out, her trembling fingers gripping the dark fabric of her mother’s uniform sleeve.
"Mom..." Abigail whimpered, her chest heaving with natural, shallow breathing. "They locked me inside."
Rachel placed a steady hand over her daughter's trembling fingers. She didn't let a single ounce of her fury show on her face. Her micro-expressions remained entirely neutral, a restrained act of pure military discipline.
Before Rachel could speak, the glass doors of the trauma bay slid open.
Nicholas walked in, his expensive navy blue business suit unwrinkled, a crisp white dress shirt and dark tie perfectly in place. His dark brown hair was styled immaculately. He looked completely out of place in an emergency room, exuding a foul, arrogant energy. Right behind him was his mother, Patricia. The older woman wore a cream tweed jacket with black trim, a pearl necklace, and matching earrings, her short blonde hair perfectly coiffed.
Nicholas rolled his eyes, looking dismissively at Rachel. He gestured casually toward Abigail as if she were a broken appliance rather than his bleeding wife.
"She's exaggerating," Nicholas said, his voice dripping with condescension. "She fell down the stairs. She’s clumsy, you know how she is, Rachel."
Rachel did not move. Her posture was rigid, her eyes fixed on Nicholas like a sniper looking through a scope.
Patricia stepped forward, her face twisting into an ugly, controlling sneer. She pointed an immaculately manicured finger at Rachel, an arrogant expression plastered across her face.
"Don't look at my son like that," Patricia hissed. "Your military rank doesn't frighten us! You think because you wear some shiny medals you can intimidate this family? We own half the hospital board."
"Mom, please," Abigail whispered, shrinking back against the pillows.
"Quiet, Abby," Nicholas snapped aggressively. He stepped forward, raising his hand as he moved toward the bed. "We are going home right now. Stop embarrassing us in front of these people."
Rachel’s reaction was instantaneous.
She immediately stepped between the hospital bed and Nicholas, intercepting his aggressive advance. With terrifying, restrained precision, Rachel pivoted her hips and delivered one swift, controlled punch straight to the center of Nicholas’s face.
The crack of cartilage echoed through the room.
Nicholas didn't even have time to raise his hands. The force of the blow lifted him off his feet, knocking him violently backward. He crashed into an IV stand, sending it clattering to the floor before he crumpled into a heap, clutching his bleeding nose in agony.
Patricia gasped. Her expression changed rapidly from arrogant elitism to complete, utter shock. She stumbled backward, her hands flying up to clutch her pearl necklace as Nicholas groaned on the floor.
Outside the glass doors, nurses in blue scrubs and two hospital security officers froze, watching the scene in absolute shock. None of them made a move to intervene. The authority radiating from the Colonel paralyzed them.
Rachel stood over Nicholas. She didn't yell. She didn't flex. She simply adjusted the cuffs of her dress uniform, her breathing perfectly even. She looked directly down at Nicholas with a calm, sharp gaze that promised absolute destruction.
"You should never have touched my daughter," Rachel said, her voice quiet and deadly.
"You bitch!" Nicholas gurgled, blood spilling over his white dress shirt. "I'll have you arrested! I'll ruin you!"
"Guards," Rachel said, not taking her eyes off Nicholas, her voice projecting effortlessly through the glass doors. The two security officers snapped to attention. "This man is the primary suspect in a felony domestic assault. If he attempts to stand up and approach this bed again, I will consider it a threat to my daughter's life and I will neutralize him permanently. Restrain him."
Patricia shrieked, dropping to her knees beside her son. "You're insane! You can't do this! We are the Vances!"
"You were the Vances," Rachel corrected coldly. "Now, you are the enemy. And I excel at destroying the enemy."
May you like
She turned her back on them, a profound insult in military culture, and faced her daughter. Abigail was staring at her mother, the fear in her eyes replaced by a small, fragile flicker of hope. Rachel gently brushed a stray lock of brown hair away from Abigail’s bruised cheek.
"We need to talk, Abby," Rachel murmured. "Tell me exactly what you meant when you said they locked you inside."
