Chapter 9

The fire cracked in the hearth, casting a warm, flickering glow across the dark wood of the cabin. Abigail had finally fallen into a restless, exhausted sleep on the sofa, her battered face twitching occasionally.
Rachel stood by the small kitchen island, watching her daughter breathe. She had changed out of her soaked dress uniform into a set of Tom’s oversized tactical fatigues. The transition mirrored her internal state; the polished diplomat in the black uniform was gone. The warlord had arrived.
Tom sat at the wooden dining table, a rugged military-grade laptop open in front of him. He was using a secure satellite uplink to keep them off the local grid. He carefully inserted Abigail’s micro-SD card into an adapter and slid it into the laptop.
"Let’s see what Nicholas is willing to kill for," Tom muttered.
Rachel walked over, standing behind his shoulder.
A folder appeared on the screen, containing forty-two high-resolution photographs. Tom clicked the first one. It was a picture of a massive architectural blueprint spread across a mahogany desk.
"Zoom in on the legend," Rachel ordered.
Tom magnified the image. The title block read: Project Leviathan - Sub-Level Retrofit. But it wasn't Vance Enterprises' logo at the top. It was a crest Rachel recognized immediately. A black eagle over a segmented shield.
"Aegis Global," Tom breathed, leaning back in his chair, running a hand over his tired face. "Mercenaries. Private military contractors. Nicholas isn't building bunkers for a cartel. He’s building a forward operating base for a rogue PMC right under the financial district."
"Aegis lost their government contracts two years ago after that massacre in the sandbox," Rachel said, her eyes tracing the intricate ventilation systems and armories drawn on the blueprints. "They were blacklisted. They’re supposed to be defunct."
"Defunct doesn't mean broke, Rachel. They have billions hidden offshore. If they are setting up an underground fortress in a major US city, they are planning a domestic operation. A coup, a massive domestic terror strike, or a violent corporate takeover. Nicholas is laundering their money through real estate."
Rachel stared at the screen. The scope of the conspiracy dwarfed her initial assumptions. Nicholas was a wealthy, abusive narcissist, but Aegis Global were professional killers. They didn't just have lawyers; they had tactical hit squads. The men in the truck who tried to run them off the road weren't just security guards; they were likely Aegis operatives.
"We can't take this to the local police," Rachel said flatly. "They’re bought. And if we go to the FBI, Aegis will have moles in the Bureau who will bury the files and have us assassinated before the grand jury convenes."
"So what’s the play?" Tom asked, looking up at her. "We have the evidence, but no one we can trust to hand it to. And right now, you are a wanted fugitive for assault and kidnapping."
Rachel walked back to the fireplace, staring into the flames. Her mind operated like a chessboard, moving pieces, calculating risks, sacrificing pawns.
"We need to bypass the bureaucracy," Rachel said slowly. "We need someone with enough firepower to raid Vance Enterprises and Aegis simultaneously, and enough authority to ignore the local police."
Tom frowned. "Who?"
"General Holden."
Tom blinked. "The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs? Rachel, you can't just call a four-star general at three in the morning and tell him a real estate developer is building a mercenary base."
"I can," Rachel said, her voice laced with absolute conviction. "He owes me. I pulled his son out of a burning Humvee in Fallujah. He told me if I ever needed a god to strike down my enemies, I just had to dial his number."
Rachel picked up her secure satellite phone from the counter. She punched in a sequence of numbers she had memorized twelve years ago but had never used.
The line hissed with static, routing through encrypted military satellites. It rang four times.
"Holden," a deep, gravelly voice answered.
"General. This is Colonel Rachel Gardner."
A brief pause. "Rachel. It’s late. What’s wrong?"
"Sir, I have actionable intelligence regarding a blacklisted PMC, Aegis Global, constructing a heavily fortified subterranean FOB beneath civilian infrastructure on US soil. They are operating through a front company, Vance Enterprises. They attempted to assassinate myself and a civilian witness tonight to cover it up."
Silence hung on the line for a long, terrifying moment.
"Where are you?" Holden finally asked.
"Off-grid safehouse. I have the blueprints. I need a Joint Special Operations strike team, sir. And I need jurisdiction."
"If you are wrong about this, Rachel, it’s treason."
"I’m not wrong, General."

"Send the files to my secure server. Sit tight. I’ll have a Blackhawk on your position in two hours." The line clicked dead.
Rachel lowered the phone. She looked at Tom, a fierce, predatory smile touching the corners of her mouth. "Pack up the laptop, Tom. The cavalry is coming."
