Chapter 7

The abandoned railyard in Sector Four was a graveyard of rusted boxcars and overgrown weeds, illuminated only by the intermittent flashes of lightning tearing through the rain-soaked sky. Rachel drove the stolen medical supply van deep into the maze of tracks, killing the engine behind a line of decaying freight cars.

A pair of headlights flashed twice from the darkness ahead. A heavily modified, matte-black off-road vehicle idled in the shadows.

Rachel climbed out of the van, the rain instantly plastering stray hairs to her forehead despite the tight military bun. She opened the cargo door and helped Abigail step down. Abigail pulled the coat tighter around her bruised ribs, shivering uncontrollably from the cold and the adrenaline crash.

Sergeant Major Tom stepped out of the black vehicle. He was a mountain of a man in his late fifties, wearing a tactical jacket and a faded baseball cap. He took one look at Abigail’s battered face in the dim light, and his jaw locked in fury.

"Abby," Tom said softly, his gravelly voice filled with unexpected tenderness. He had known her since she was a teenager. "Let’s get you into the heat."

Tom helped her into the back seat of the SUV, tossing her a heavy fleece blanket. Rachel climbed into the passenger seat, while Tom slid behind the wheel and threw the vehicle into gear. They navigated out of the railyard, avoiding main roads, heading toward the interstate that would take them into the Virginia mountains.

"The hospital is a madhouse," Tom said, keeping his eyes on the road. "I tapped into the local police dispatch on the way here. Nicholas reported you for assault, grand theft auto, and kidnapping. He’s claiming Abigail is suffering from severe paranoia and psychosis due to a head injury."

Rachel scoffed bitterly. "The head injury he gave her. Patricia was planning to have her legally committed. This is their narrative. They want to discredit anything Abby says about the waterfront blueprints by making her look insane."

"It’s working," Tom noted grimly. "There’s a BOLO out for your government SUV, and they’ve flagged your credit cards. You’re officially a fugitive in the eyes of the city police, Rachel."

From the back seat, Abigail let out a quiet sob. "I ruined everything. You're going to lose your career, Mom. You'll go to prison because of me."

Rachel turned around in her seat, her eyes fierce. "Do not apologize, Abigail. A career is a piece of paper. You are my blood. Nicholas thought because he had money, he had power. He is about to learn what real power looks like."

"He has reach, Rachel," Tom warned, glancing at the rearview mirror. "If Vance is building reinforced subterranean structures, he’s dealing with players who don't care about your Army rank. We need leverage. Evidence."

Rachel looked at Abigail. "Abby, those blueprints you saw. Where were they?"

Abigail wiped her face, struggling to think clearly through the pain of her concussion. "In his home office. In the floor safe. He... he caught me taking pictures of them on my phone before he dragged me downstairs."

Rachel’s heart skipped a beat. "You took pictures? Where is your phone?"

"He took it," Abigail whispered, her voice cracking. "He smashed it on the floor. But..."

She hesitated, looking down at her hands.

"But what, Abby?" Rachel pressed gently.

"I knew he was coming up the stairs," Abigail said, her breathing shallow. "I knew I didn't have time to put the files back. Before he came into the room... I pulled the SD card out of my phone. The memory card with the photos."

Rachel and Tom exchanged a look of pure shock.

"Where is the card, Abby?" Rachel asked.

Abigail reached into the pocket of her bloodied white dress, beneath the heavy coat. Her trembling fingers pulled out a tiny, black micro-SD card.

"I swallowed it," Abigail admitted, her voice trembling. "When they locked me in the basement, I was terrified they would search me. I swallowed it. I only... got it back yesterday."

Rachel stared at the tiny square of plastic in her daughter's palm. It was the most disgusting, brilliant, and courageous tactical move she had ever witnessed.

"You beautiful, brilliant girl," Rachel breathed, reaching back to take the card, wrapping it carefully in a clean tissue. "This is it. This is our leverage."

Suddenly, the heavy frame of the SUV shuddered violently. A blinding spotlight flooded the cabin from behind.

"Hold on!" Tom roared.

A massive black security truck rammed into their rear bumper, sending them skidding sideways on the wet asphalt. Nicholas’s men had found them.
