Chapter 1 - The Blue-Gray Eyes

The second I walked into the dimly lit hall of St. Margaret’s orphanage, twenty-seven children went completely, terrifyingly silent.
Maybe it was because of the two massive, heavily armed men in dark suits standing right behind me. Or maybe it was because people in this city had learned to hold their breath around men carrying the name Luca Vitelli. As the head of a multi-million-dollar shipping empire, I wasn't known for my charity. I was here to inspect the property for a real estate acquisition.
But then, the cinematic silence of the room was violently shattered.
One little girl broke away from the group of terrified orphans. She ran straight toward me, her tiny bare feet slapping against the cold linoleum floor.
“Daddy!”
She hit my legs so hard I physically staggered backward. Her small, fragile arms locked around my knees in a desperate, crushing grip.
“You took forever,” she whispered into my slacks.
I looked down, completely frozen. She had wild dark curls. A stubborn, sharp chin. And when she tilted her head back to look at me, my heart entirely stopped in my chest. She had piercing, blue-gray eyes.
My eyes.
For one agonizing, terrifying second, I completely forgot how to breathe. I dropped to one knee, my expensive suit hitting the dirty floor. I grabbed her small shoulders, my hands shaking uncontrollably.
“What’s your name?” I choked out, my voice cracking.
She frowned, looking at me with pure, innocent confusion. “You know.”
“I want to hear you say it, sweetheart.”
“Sophia.”

Everything inside me violently shattered.
👉 I had spent six years mourning a dead child, but the real nightmare was waiting inside the director’s office.
