Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

All the color violently drained from Matteo’s perfectly contoured face. He physically staggered backward, his expensive briefcase bumping against the doorframe.
“Luca?!” Matteo gasped, sheer, unadulterated terror hijacking his nervous system.
But true to his sociopathic nature, Matteo instantly tried to play the hero. He forced a massive, fake smile, holding his hands up in a gesture of absolute innocence.
“Luca! My God, thank heaven you're here!” Matteo lied effortlessly, his voice pitching higher with fake excitement. “I just tracked her down today! I didn't want to get your hopes up until I verified it was actually Sophia! I came here tonight to rescue her and bring her straight home to you!”
It was a brilliant, flawless performance. If I hadn't seen his signature on the six-year-old intake form, I might have believed him.
I didn't scream. I didn't draw a weapon. The cinematic realism of my absolute, chilling calm terrified him far more than a gun ever could.
I stepped closer to him.
“You paid the director to change her name six years ago, Matteo,” I whispered, completely shattering his illusion. “You told me she was dead while you poured me drinks in my own house.”
Matteo’s fake smile slowly vanished. The desperate, cornered rat realized the trap had completely snapped shut.
His two bodyguards immediately reached into their jackets for their weapons, but before their fingers even grazed the metal, the cold barrels of Nico and Vincent’s suppressed pistols were pressed directly against the backs of their skulls.
