Chapter 1 - The Unsigned Document

The grand American mansion office was a suffocating fortress of wealth and dark secrets. High above, a massive crystal chandelier cast a cold, blinding light over the heavy mahogany desk.
Vincent sat at the desk, his jaw clenched tight. He was a terrifyingly powerful man in his thirties, wearing a perfectly tailored dark suit. The crisp white collar of his shirt revealed the edge of dark, intricate mafia-style tattoos creeping up his neck, matching the heavy ink on his hands. He held an expensive gold fountain pen, hovering it agonizingly over a thick stack of legal documents.
It was a Declaration of Death in Absentia. His wife, Clara, had been mysteriously missing for exactly three years.
Standing right beside him was Isabella, his new fiancée. Wearing a stunning blue floral dress, she looked like a picture-perfect high-society bride. But her eyes were burning with a toxic, impatient greed.
"Just sign it, Vince," Isabella urged softly, placing her manicured hand on his shoulder. "It's time to let her go. It's time for our future."
Vincent took a shaky breath, lowering the pen toward the signature line.
But before the ink could touch the paper, small, rapid footsteps echoed across the polished hardwood floor.
Emily, Vincent’s eight-year-old daughter, rushed up to the heavy mahogany desk. She was wearing a beautiful pink dress, her blonde hair messy, her small face completely frantic. She didn't look at Isabella. She completely ignored the legal documents. She reached directly for the heavy black corporate phone sitting on her father's desk.
