Chapter 1 - The Cruel Laughter

The luxurious library of the Rinaldi estate echoed with cruel, mocking laughter.

"Look at this pathetic sight," Camille sneered, swirling her expensive champagne. She looked down at the tiny, three-year-old girl kneeling on the imported Persian rug. "The little rat thinks she’s a doctor."

Dean, the mafia boss's trusted right-hand man, chuckled darkly from the leather sofa. "Let the kid play, Camille. It's the most action Massimo’s legs have seen in six months."

Sitting in his custom wheelchair, Massimo Rinaldi, the most feared crime boss on the East Coast, remained perfectly still. His sharp features were carved from stone, his cold gray eyes masking a deep, suffocating despair. Six months ago, a brutal ambush had shattered his lower spine. The finest doctors in the world had all delivered the same verdict: he would never walk again.

Yet, right now, he quietly extended his lifeless feet toward little Nina.

Nina was the daughter of his head housekeeper, Carla. The tiny girl wore a soft, faded cotton dress. She carried a small basin of warm water, completely ignoring the mocking billionaires in the room.

"I'll wash your feet, Uncle," Nina whispered sweetly, her clumsy little hands cupping the warm water over his cold skin. "And then you'll walk again. They are just sleeping."

Carla, the terrified maid, stood trembling in the doorway, clutching a linen towel. She was terrified that Camille would fire her for letting her daughter bother the paralyzed don.

"Take this trash out of my sight," Camille finally snapped, her smile vanishing. "Massimo, tell the maid to get her brat out of here before I have them both thrown on the street."

Massimo’s jaw tightened. He opened his mouth to order Camille to leave the child alone.
