Massimo pushed open the swinging doors to the kitchen.
Carla was kneeling on the floor, holding little Nina tightly against her chest. She had heard the gunshot and thought the traitors had finally murdered her boss. She was preparing to run for their lives.

Massimo looked up at Carla. "You are no longer a maid in this house, Carla. You and Nina are under my personal protection. I am putting a million dollars into a trust fund for her education, and you are taking over as the Head Estate Manager. You will never have to worry about anything ever again."
Carla broke down into heavy, beautiful sobs of relief, thanking him over and over again.
Massimo stood up, picking little Nina up in his strong arms. The mafia boss, feared by the entire underworld, walked through his estate carrying the tiny girl who had unknowingly saved his life.
