Chapter 3 - The Trusted Enforcer

Dominic’s gray-blue eyes turned into shards of absolute ice. He stared through the glass windows as the driver’s side door of the black sedan opened.

Stepping out into the Chicago night was Marcus Vance.

Marcus was Dominic’s most trusted underboss and chief financial accountant. He was a man who handled the syndicate’s billions, a man who had sat at Dominic’s dinner table for five years. He wore a perfectly tailored designer suit and a smug, arrogant smile as he handed his keys to the valet.

Inside the restaurant, Dominic’s bodyguards saw Marcus approaching and silently closed ranks, standing firmly around Dominic’s table to create a human shield for the children.

Marcus strolled through the front doors, adjusting his expensive silk tie. He looked toward Dominic’s table, preparing to greet his boss with a warm smile.

But then, Marcus saw the pale-yellow dress. He saw the honey-brown hair. He saw Lily.

Marcus’s arrogant smile completely vanished. For a fraction of a second, his realistic micro-expressions betrayed pure, unadulterated panic. The blood drained from his face, and his hand instinctively twitched toward the inside of his suit jacket.

Dominic didn't miss a single detail. He watched his trusted accountant’s breathing hitch. He watched the sweat bead on Marcus’s forehead.

“Dominic!” Marcus quickly recovered, forcing a loud, fake laugh as he marched toward the table. “I see we have a little rat problem in the restaurant tonight! Security, why haven't you thrown this filthy street beggar out yet?”

Marcus reached his hand out, attempting to grab Lily by the back of her burgundy cardigan to drag her away.

Before Marcus’s fingers could even touch the fabric, Dominic’s massive hand shot out. He gripped Marcus’s wrist with bone-crushing force, stopping him dead in his tracks.
