Chapter 4 - The Arrogant Lie

Marcus swallowed hard, wincing as Dominic slowly released his wrist. He awkwardly pulled out the chair across the table and sat down, trying desperately to regain his composure.
“Boss, listen to me,” Marcus sneered, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at Lily, who was trembling and hiding her face against Noah’s blanket. “That little thief has been terrorizing the neighborhood. She broke into my car yesterday and stole my wallet. She’s a dangerous, feral runaway. Let me handle her.”
Dominic leaned back in his chair. He didn't yell. He didn't accuse. He just stared at Marcus, his face an unreadable mask of cinematic realism.
“A feral runaway,” Dominic repeated softly.
“Exactly,” Marcus nodded eagerly, sweating under the warm glow of the crystal chandeliers. “She’s a liar. Whatever she’s trying to tell you, it’s a total fabrication to extort money.”
Dominic looked at the terrifying dark bruise on Lily’s wrist. He looked at the starving eight-month-old baby. Then he looked at the man wearing a fifty-thousand-dollar watch who was frantically trying to discredit a child.
Dominic knew Marcus was lying. But he needed absolute proof before he dismantled a high-ranking member of his own syndicate.
Dominic turned his head slightly toward Rosa, the waitress, who had been watching the scene with deep, maternal concern.
“Rosa,” Dominic said smoothly. “Take the children to my private office in the back. Lock the door. Feed them until they are full. No one enters except me.”
“Yes, Mr. Moretti,” Rosa said instantly. She gently placed a hand on Lily’s shoulder, guiding the terrified girl and the baby away from the table.
Marcus watched them leave, a muscle twitching aggressively in his jaw. “Dominic, you’re making a mistake. You can't trust street trash.”

“I don't trust anyone, Marcus,” Dominic replied coldly. “Pour yourself a drink. We have business to discuss.”
