Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

The heavy deadbolts on the restaurant’s glass doors clicked shut with a loud, resounding echo. The motorized blackout blinds smoothly rolled down, plunging the luxury dining room into complete, isolated privacy.

Marcus stopped mid-sip. The arrogant smile finally slid completely off his face.

“Dominic?” Marcus asked, his voice wavering as he looked around at the bodyguards who were suddenly staring at him with cold, predatory intent. “What’s going on? Why are we locking down?”

Dominic leaned forward, resting his forearms on the mahogany table. The dark tattoos on his skin seemed to pulse with the tension in the room. He slowly reached out and placed the gold signet ring squarely in the center of the table.

It hit the wood with a heavy clink.

Marcus stared at the ring. All the blood completely left his head. He looked like he had just seen a ghost. His entire body went rigid with absolute, unfiltered terror.

“Arthur Carter’s ring,” Dominic stated, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that shook the crystal glasses. “A man who died in a fire. Yet, an eleven-year-old girl walks into my restaurant carrying it, starving and covered in bruises.”

“Dominic, I can explain—” Marcus stammered, frantically pushing his chair back.

“You murdered my best friend,” Dominic said softly, the lethal calmness making his words infinitely more terrifying. “You executed his wife. You stole his money. And you locked a child and an infant in a basement to starve to death.”

Marcus realized his silver tongue couldn't save him. He reached inside his tailored suit jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of his concealed firearm.
