Chapter 5 - The Orphan's Secret

Inside the soundproof safety of Dominic’s private office, Rosa locked the heavy oak door. The room was warm, filled with the scent of leather and expensive mahogany.
Rosa guided Lily to a plush leather sofa and handed her a fresh plate of food. “You're safe here, sweetheart. He can't hurt you anymore.”
Lily set her baby brother down gently on the sofa cushions. Noah happily clutched a soft dinner roll in his tiny hands, finally eating.
Lily looked up at Rosa, her eyes welling with heavy, exhausted tears. “He’s going to kill us. He told me if I ever told anyone the truth, he would put Noah in a garbage bag and throw him in the river.”
Rosa gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror. “Why? Why would he do that to you?”
Lily reached a trembling hand deep into the pocket of her oversized burgundy cardigan. She pulled out something wrapped tightly in a dirty, blood-stained handkerchief.
With shaking fingers, Lily unfolded the cloth. Resting inside was a heavy, custom-made gold signet ring and a small, black USB flash drive.
“My daddy’s name was Arthur Carter,” Lily sobbed quietly, wiping her face. “He managed the money for Mr. Moretti. Three weeks ago, Marcus came to our house late at night. He shot my mommy and daddy. He locked me and Noah in the basement so he could steal all the money and the house.”
Rosa’s blood turned to absolute ice. Arthur Carter had been Dominic’s most loyal financial advisor and closest friend. He had supposedly died in a tragic "gas leak explosion" at his home three weeks ago.
“I squeezed through the basement window last night,” Lily cried, clutching the ring. “I took my daddy’s backup drive from his desk. It shows everything Marcus stole.”
