Chapter 10 - The Closet Door Came Off Its Hinges

Milo refused to walk down the entrance hallway for several weeks.
He used the kitchen entrance instead.
Adrian did not force him.
Then one Saturday, Milo stood at the top of the stairs and looked toward the closet.
“Can we get rid of it?”
Adrian assumed he meant empty the closet.
“Sure.”
“No.”
Milo pointed.
“The door.”
So they removed it.
Together.
Adrian unscrewed the hinges.
Milo held the screwdriver for part of it.
No dramatic smashing.
No symbolic destruction.
Just work.
When the door finally came free, Adrian carried it into the garage.
The closet remained open.
Shelves.
Coats.
Shoes.
Nothing hidden.
Milo stood in front of it.
Then stepped inside voluntarily.
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“You okay?”
Milo nodded.
He touched the interior wall he had once grabbed after Bianca shoved him.
Then walked back out.
“Can we make it something else?”
“What?”
Milo shrugged.
“Books?”
That weekend, Adrian removed the coat rail.
Installed low shelving.
Added a small light that never turned off unless someone deliberately switched it.
Milo put books inside.
A cushion.
And eventually the teddy bear.
Not permanently.
Just sometimes.
The place Bianca had used to make him disappear became a place Milo chose to enter.
That mattered.

Choice was the difference.
