Chapter 7 - Bianca Claimed The Closet Was A “Calm-Down Space”
When attorneys became involved, Bianca changed vocabulary.
She stopped calling it punishment.
Now it was a “calm-down space.”
Her lawyer argued that parents routinely use quiet spaces for emotionally overwhelmed children.
Adrian’s attorney asked:
“Was the door locked?”
Sometimes.
“Could Milo leave whenever he wanted?”
No.
“Was he placed there specifically for crying?”
Sometimes.
“Did he ask not to go?”
Yes.
“Was it recommended by any therapist?”
No.
“Was there lighting?”
Only whatever entered under the door.
“Did Milo have access to water?”
No.
“Did anyone monitor him continuously?”
No.
The language collapsed.
A calm-down space is voluntary or supportive.
A locked dark closet controlled by an angry adult is confinement.
No elegant phrase changed that.
Bianca became increasingly defensive.
“He was never injured.”
That became her favorite sentence.
Adrian eventually answered:
“You keep describing the absence of injury like it proves the presence of care.”
