Chapter 14 - Adrian Stopped Confusing Provision With Parenting

Before the closet incident, Adrian thought he was a good father because he provided everything.

Excellent school.

Safe neighborhood.

Large house.

Vacations.

Medical care.

Savings.

Afterward, he realized provision can coexist with absence.

So he changed boring things.

Reduced travel.

Moved meetings.

Handled school pickup twice a week himself.

Stopped routing every message through household staff.

Learned Milo’s teacher’s first name.

Learned which cereal he hated.

Learned he pretended not to like thunderstorms because he thought eight was “too old.”

Learned Milo still remembered Hannah’s perfume.

Learned that Milo sometimes wanted to talk about her and sometimes absolutely did not.

The first time Milo woke from a nightmare after Bianca left, Adrian stayed beside him.

No speeches.

No telling him to be strong.

No trying to fix grief.

Just stayed.

At 2:17 a.m., Milo whispered:

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re still here.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.”

Milo closed his eyes again.

That was parenting too.

May you like

Sometimes especially that.
