Chapter 11 - Vanessa Made One Last Move
Vanessa was removed from the house the next morning.
Not by police at first.
By the family attorney and a court-approved temporary order Daniel managed to obtain by evening using the video evidence and the pediatric doctor’s report.
But Vanessa was not done.
Two days later she filed emergency claims of her own.
She alleged Daniel was unstable.
She alleged Ethan had “violent behavioral issues.”
She alleged Sophie had been hidden from her.
Daniel wasn’t even surprised.
What did surprise him was how little it shook him now.
Because this time he had evidence.
Not feelings.
Not suspicions.
Evidence.
Still, the case dragged just long enough to hurt.
Ethan had nightmares.
Sophie cried if anyone closed a bedroom door too fast.
Daniel moved both children temporarily into the large downstairs guest suite so they could sleep close to him. Some nights Ethan slept in the same room anyway, curled in an armchair beside Sophie’s crib like he still thought he had night watch.
One afternoon Daniel found him checking under the bed before putting Sophie down for her nap.
That sight nearly destroyed him.
He knelt beside his son.
“You don’t have to do this alone anymore.”
Ethan looked embarrassed. “I know.”
But he wasn’t ready to believe it yet.
