Chapter 13 - Daniel Learned The Thing He Couldn’t Undo

Life didn’t reset once Vanessa was gone.
That was the hard truth nobody told him.
You imagine that once the danger is removed, safety rushes back in all at once.
It doesn’t.
It returns in inches.
One evening Daniel tucked Sophie into her crib and found Ethan standing in the doorway, watching.
“Do you want to say goodnight too?” Daniel asked.
Ethan nodded.
He went over, kissed Sophie’s forehead, and then lingered.
After Daniel turned out the nursery light, Ethan followed him into the hall.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“I used to leave my door open so I could hear if she cried.”
Daniel swallowed.
Ethan kept going, words coming in a rush now.
“Sometimes I’d wake up first. Before Vanessa. If Sophie cried loud, Vanessa got meaner. So I tried to get there first.”
Daniel crouched slowly, level with his son.
“How long?”
Ethan shrugged like he didn’t know how to measure time in anything except dread.
“A while.”
That answer was not enough, but it was all his son had.
Daniel pulled him into a hug.
A real one.
The kind no child should have to earn by being brave.
“I am so sorry,” he said into Ethan’s hair.
Ethan held on tightly.

And for the first time since the bedroom, he let himself feel small.
