Chapter 3 - The Fifteen Seconds That Changed Everything

Sophie trembled under the bed, her pale pink onesie dusty at the knees, little curls stuck damply to her forehead.

She was too young to understand the words, but not too young to understand danger.

Ethan stood in front of the bed with both arms spread, heart hammering so hard it hurt.

Vanessa, auburn hair perfectly pinned, ivory top sharp against her black trousers, stepped toward him with the riding crop in one hand.

“TELL ME WHERE IT IS.”

Before Ethan could move, the crop cracked across his face.

The sound split the room.

His cheek jerked hard to one side, and a hot welt flared instantly beneath his eye.

Sophie sobbed louder under the bed.

Ethan staggered but didn’t fall.

One hand flew to his cheek. The other stayed stretched protectively toward the shadowed space under the bed.

“PLEASE—DON’T TOUCH SOPHIE!”

Vanessa moved closer, completely unbothered by the tears, the fear, the red mark rising on an eight-year-old boy’s face.

“Then you can take the punishment in her place.”

She shoved him hard against the side of the bed. Ethan’s shoulder slammed into the frame. The mattress jolted. Sophie cried out underneath it.

Vanessa raised the riding crop again.

That was the exact moment the bedroom door flew open.

Daniel rushed in so fast the doorknob struck the wall.

He took in the whole scene at once—Ethan cornered beside the bed, Sophie crying underneath it, Vanessa with the crop raised in her hand.

He didn’t shout first.

He moved.

His hand clamped around Vanessa’s wrist in midair with enough force to stop the downswing cold.

Vanessa gasped and turned in shock.

Daniel’s voice came out low and terrifyingly calm.

“Go ahead. Swing that whip again.”

For the first time all afternoon, Vanessa looked afraid.

Daniel yanked the crop from her hand and threw it across the room. It skidded beneath the dresser.

Then he stepped fully between Vanessa and the children.

Ethan dropped to his knees by the bed at once, reaching under with both arms.

“It’s okay, Sophie,” he whispered desperately. “I’m here, I’m here.”

Daniel never took his eyes off Vanessa.

“How long have you been doing this to my children?”

Vanessa stared at him, speechless.

And for the first time since she married him, Daniel did not need an explanation to know he had brought a monster into his home.
