Chapter 12 - The Court Heard Ethan’s Voice
Daniel did not want Ethan dragged through a public fight.
The child advocate didn’t want that either.
So Ethan gave a recorded statement in a calm, child-sensitive setting with a therapist present.
Daniel wasn’t in the room.
Later, with permission, he watched part of it.
The interviewer asked, “Why did you hide the card?”
Ethan answered without drama.
“Because she was scared of Dad seeing it.”
“How did you know?”
“Because when grown-ups are mad, they look one way. When they’re scared, they look another way.”
Daniel had to stop the recording for a minute after that.
Then the interviewer asked, “Why did you stand in front of the bed?”
Ethan looked confused by the question.
“Because Sophie was under there.”
“As if that explains it,” Daniel whispered to the paused screen.
And maybe it did.
To Ethan, the answer was obvious.
Of course he stood there.
She was his little sister.
The court-appointed evaluator also reviewed the footage of Vanessa striking Ethan and raising the crop again before Daniel entered.
That alone was enough to undo most of her performance.
By the time the temporary hearing concluded, Vanessa was barred from unsupervised contact with either child and from entering Daniel’s home.
Her lawyer tried to argue stress, misunderstanding, escalating household conflict.
The judge was unmoved.
Especially after seeing Vanessa’s own recorded words about the trust.
Money always clarified motive.
